I was pleased to see the two adjoining articles in the paper Monday, Jan. 5, titled "Young and violent" and "Teens and suicide." It is important to be aware of the increasing suicide and violence rates here in our own state.

I think in order to put a stop to these tragedies, we need to start at the source: the children. I feel that if we better educated our young ones about the proper handling and use of firearms, communities everywhere would be safer and more peaceful environments.I would also like to stress to all of the parents reading this that if you have a gun in your home, please make sure it is in a safe storage place out of the reach of children. Educate your children on the importance of gun safety and of the consequences that occur when firearms are used carelessly. You can never be too careful when it comes to guns.
