A South Salt Lake man was in stable condition at University Hospital Thursday morning after emergency surgery for a stab wound.
Randy Atwood, 26, 3900 S. 376 East #2, allegedly suffered the wound while at Fitts Park, 3050 S. 500 East, in South Salt Lake at 2 p.m. Wednesday, South Salt Lake police Sgt. Beau Babka said.Police didn't know about the stabbing until several hours after it happened, when they got a call from officials at St. Marks Hospital, where Atwood was initially taken by his girlfriend, Leslie Lambrose, at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Atwood was transferred to University Hospital for surgery when his condition worsened around 7:30 p.m.
Details of the incident are sketchy, Babka said, but Lambrose told police Atwood said he was in the park with his friend, Johnny Walker, 45, when he was stabbed by an unknown assailant. He described the man as having light skin and long blond hair. He said the man threw the knife and a vodka bottle away in the park as he fled.
Police have yet to find either item, but more than six hours elapsed between the time of the stabbing and when police searched the park, Babka said. Police have not located the blond-haired suspect either, he said.
