Utahns will have an extra six months to get used to the state's second area code.
The Public Service Commission said Wednesday it is extending the phase-in period for the 435 area code in response to a request from telephone companies for more time to adjust to the change. The phase-in period, during which either the 435 or 801 area code can be used for long-distance calls, was to have ended March 22. It will now continue until Sept. 20.
Utah split into two area codes, 435 and 801, last September. The new code is necessary because growth in number of telephone lines, cellular phones and pagers has used nearly all the available prefixes under the 801 code.
The new area code applies to most of the state outside the Wasatch Front.
