Patrick Stewart's resistance to the Internet crumbled during filming in Australia for USA Network's miniseries "Moby Dick":
"The best thing about computers is e-mail. I'd always thought having a phone was all I needed, but Australia's time zones are out of sync with the rest of the world."I could write from Melbourne to my friend Brent Spiner (Data on "Star Trek: The Next Generation"), who was in a play on Broadway, and it was almost like a conversation. I could use the computer in the makeup trailer, between shots, at home - anywhere.
"I searched the Internet for things about `Moby Dick' before I started playing Ahab. There's a huge amount of information out there. I had no idea how much I could access.
"When I was on the set down in southern Australia, with the winter wind blowing in from Antarctica, when I was standing on the quarterdeck of Ahab's ship, the Pequod, on my whalebone peg leg, I played computer games. It kept my mind going but wasn't too taxing. I'm a Tetris guy, just moving those blocks around."
