Senators gave unanimous approval Friday to a bill criminalizing sexual intercourse and other sex acts between youths age 16 to 17 and partners 10 or more years older.

The bill does not apply to married couples.Sen. LeRay McAllister, R-Orem, proposed the change in law as a way to protect teenagers, regardless of gender.

The age of sexual consent in Utah is now 16 years with no restriction on the age of potential partners.
