Ground has been broken for a 90,000 square-foot building at 575 W. Murray Boulevard to consolidate operations of 3M Health Information Systems and its growing health information software business.
The company currently operates out of buildings at 860 E. 45th South and 5965 S. Ninth East. Coupled with last year's acquisition of a major segment of Control Data Corp.'s healthcare services business, the need for a consolidated structure became apparent.Al Eggert, 3M HIS general manager, said his company is one of the largest in Utah, ranking in the top one-half of 1 percent in the number of employees. He said the new building will help strengthen 3M's leadership in the hospital information systems industry.
"In the last five years our customer base has increased four-fold to a total of 1,200," Eggert said. "This new facility will consolidate all of our operations under one roof, allowing us to react more quickly to our customers' needs."
The three-story building was designed by architect Lynn Jones of MHT Architects Inc. for the Boyer Co., which will lease the building to 3M. Kyle Taft, an architect who will be in charge of the project for the architectural firm, said the building will have a steel frame with warm gray-colored masonry walls and glass.
It is scheduled for completion next February, Taft said.
