"The River," a poem by Chip Rawlins, Logan, has won first prize in the Utah Wilderness Association's annual wilderness poetry competition.

Association spokeswoman Margaret Pettis said nearly 300 poets from 15 states entered this year's competition, the third sponsored by the organization. The association is a statewide nonprofit conservation group "dedicated to the preservation of Utah's diminishing wild lands," she said.Five honorable mention winners were chosen: Ken Toll, Heber City; LaVon Carroll, Ogden; William Johnson, Lewiston, Idaho; and Walt Martin and Maurine Haltiner, both of Salt Lake City.
