Costa Rican defender Douglas Sequeira was suspended by FIFA for three World Cup qualifiers for a foul against U.S. defender Steve Cherundolo last month in Salt Lake City.

Sequeira was ejected in second-half injury time during a 3-0 loss on June 4 after kneeing Cherundolo in the stomach.

In a statement on its Web site Thursday, the Costa Rican soccer federation said it will appeal the penalty, which also included a $5,500 fine. Sequeira was "trying for the ball and never intended to hurt his adversary," the federation said.
