Gov. Olene Walker has named her choice to replace retiring 3rd District Judge Michael Burton.

The governor appointed Constandinos (Deno) G. Himonas, a lawyer with the firm Jones, Waldo, Holbrook & Mcdonough. He must now be approved by the Senate.

Himonas holds a law degree from the University of Chicago and a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Utah.

He represented backers of an effort in 2002 to get an initiative on the ballot restricting radioactive waste storage. He also represented Salt Lake Tribune managers in 2001 in their efforts to prevent the paper's new owner, MediaNews Group, from making changes to the joint-operating agreement the paper shares with the Deseret Morning News.

His other law-related credentials include:

• Chairmanship of the litigation section of the Utah State Bar.

• Membership on the Federal Bar Association Executive Committee, the Utah State Bar Character and Fitness Committee, the Law and Economics Society of Utah and the Aldon J. Anderson Inns of Court.

• Service as treasurer of the Hellenic Bar Association.
