The mother of a 9-year-old girl who lost her lower legs to frostbite last winter after being locked in an unheated apartment was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison for felony child neglect. Lake County Superior Court Judge Richard W. Maroc in Crown Point, Ind., also said he will recommend treatment for Darlwin J. Britt's cocaine habit while the 29-year-old woman is in prison. Her daughter, Darlwin Carlisle, lost the lower part of her legs to frostbite last winter after being locked in an unheated apartment. The sentence had been specified in the plea bargain that spared the daughter from testifying against her mother.
