The Greatest Show on Earth will make a 16-week tour of Japan this summer in the first-ever Far East appearance in the 118-year history of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The tour also will mark the first time in 30 years the circus has played under a tent.

Kenneth Feld, owner, president and producer of the circus whose winter headquarters are here, said there is a practical reason the 175 artists will perform under a tent during the tour, Feld said.

"You could never fit an elephant in the doors" of most Japanese arenas, built mainly for sumo wrestling, he said.
