A House appropriations subcommittee approved $1 million Wednesday for a demonstration project to widen a milelong strip of 84th West in Magna that has been the scene of 13 traffic deaths in the past two years.

The money will allow the state of Utah to acquire land and pave an additional lane for traffic and build sidewalks along the route.The House transportation subcommittee also cleared $5 million to the Utah Transit Authority. The UTA will use the money to make a study of a proposed light-rail commuter system for the Salt Lake Valley.
