A May 31 hearing has been set for a convicted killer accused of brutally murdering a Salt Lake County woman last summer.
David Franklin Young, 28, Bridgeport, Ill., who was flown to Utah last week by U.S. marshals, appeared before 3rd Circuit Judge Roger Livingston, who set the hearing date.
Young is charged with first-degree murder and auto theft in connection with the death of Ember Kimberly Mars, 27, whose nude body was discovered Aug. 19, 1987, in her home at 6262 S. Dewdrops Drive. An autopsy determined Mars was raped, beaten about the head and stabbed.
Following the murder, Young stole Mars' small pickup truck, according to the charges. Illinois police spotted the truck Aug. 27 and, after a high-speed chase, arrested Young, who was on parole after serving time for killing his girlfriend in 1982 and was being sought in the murder of his wife in Indiana a month earlier.
Young has since pleaded guilty to his wife's murder and was serving a life sentence when Utah authorities decided to extradite him for the Salt Lake County murder.
