A Salt Lake man has been charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors in connection with an automobile accident that killed a 15-year-old girl Saturday night.
Raymond J. Ortega, 31, 1597 W. Indiana Ave., is charged with vehicle homicide, a third-degree felony, and tampering with evidence, a second-degree felony.
He is also charged with misdemeanor counts of leaving the scene of an accident and driving on a suspended license, according to a criminal complaint filed in 3rd Circuit Court.
Ortega is accused of being "extremely intoxicated" while driving the car that struck Belen Montoya, 15, while she was walking across Indiana Avenue near 12th West about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the complaint.
When police arrived, witnesses said the driver had fled. An officer located Ortega a few blocks away and observed him "hosing blood and human tissue from his vehicle," the complaint states.
A check with the state Driver License Division revealed that Ortega's license had been suspended, according to the charges.
