A West Valley City man was rescued Saturday from an abandoned mine shaft where he was trapped for nearly three hours.
Utah County search-and-rescuesquad members rappelled into the abandoned shaft to free John Carlson, 25. He was taken to American Fork Hospital, treated for minor injuries and released, a sheriff's dispatcher said.Carlson and an unidentified companion were camping near Five Mile Pass, which extends from Fairfield into Cedar Valley, when they attempted to explore a vertical mine shaft about 4 miles west of Fairfield.
The dispatcher said Carlson's companion was lowering him by a rope that broke, dropping him 50 to 75 feet down the shaft about 11:30 a.m.
The companion and other campers in the area tried to rescue Carlson for two hours before contacting authorities.
The search-and-rescue team and Lehi Police Department reserves responded, using a wrecker with an extendable boom to enable the climbers to rappel to the trapped man.
