A West Valley City man is home safe after falling between 50 and 75 feet down an abandoned mine shaft at Five Mile Pass, about four miles west of Fairfield, or eight miles west of Lehi.
John Carlson, 25, was hiking with a companion Saturday at 11:30 a.m. when he decided to explore the vertical mine shaft. Carlson had been lowered part way down when his rope broke.Area campers attempted for two hours to rescue the victim, but lacked rappelling equipment. At 1:48 p.m., the Utah County Sheriff's department and a search and rescue team were called in, and they raised Carlson at about 3:30 p.m.
Carlson was taken to American Fork Hospital, where he was treated for cuts and abrasions. Doctors said he had no fractures or internal injuries, and he was sent home.
