Two passengers in a van en route to Chicago that police say carried 420 pounds of marijuana have entered not guilty pleas to charges of possession with the intent to distribute.

Juan Suarez and Elizabeth Suarez, a husband and wife in their late 20s, entered the not guilty pleas through an interpreter during an arraignment Tuesday before 5th District Court J. Philip Eves.

Utah Highway Patrol officer Larry Orton said he stopped a van en route from San Diego to Chicago on I-15 on April 21.

Orton said the van was traveling only 45 mph on the interstate and after he stopped the vehicle, the driver said he felt ill. Orton said he noticed contact paper pealing off boards in the rear of the van and found $1 million worth of marijuana after a search.

Eves set bail for the Suarez couple at $50,000 each, and continued arraignment for David Villa Armenta of Chicago until later this month.
