Dave Bliss of Southern Methodist Wednesday was named basketball coach at the University of New Mexico, filling the position turned down earlier in the week by Indiana coach Bobby Knight.
Bliss, who held the same position at SMU, will take over the program June 1.
"Dave possesses the qualities we value for the basketball program, for the university community and for the state of New Mexico," New Mexico President Gerald May said. "He is a leader. He is dedicated to academic excellence and he is committed to the community."
Bliss replaces Gary Colson, who resigned under pressure last month. Bliss had two years left on a four-year contract with SMU. His salary has not been released.
