Impeached Gov. Evan Mecham and his attorney were accused Friday of trying to "poison" the jury in the ex-chief executive's criminal trial with publicity-seeking theatrics.
Prosecutors asked Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Michael Ryan to issue a court order banning Mecham and defense attorney Michael Scott "from continuing to create inappropriate pretrial publicity."Scott said he has not been seeking publicity, but only trying to respond in a professional manner to questions from reporters.
"I would be perfectly happy to exist here and not be bothered by the press," Scott said. "However, because of the stature of my client, I feel it's in his best interests not to hide or be uncooperative.
