A nationwide recall has been issued for one-ounce bottles of Humco and Britelife Ipecac syrup. Bottles bearing these brand labels may actually contain poisonous levels of other drugs.
The bottles either contain iodides tincture, a mild antiseptic used to treat cuts, or poisonous levels of eucalyptus oil. Both products have been distributed nationwide, federal Food and Drug Administration officials say, and are found at various Utah outlets.
Syrup of Ipecac is used to induce vomitting, and the regular dosage is half an ounce. This amount of drug from one of the mislabeled bottles would be enough to kill a small child, officials said.
Consumers who would like more information may call the state Health Department at 538-6339 or the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency line at 615-736-2088.
