A Layton dentist pleaded guilty Tuesday in 2nd District Court to two charges of forcible sexual abuse involving young girls who say they awoke nude in his dentist chair after being given gas or an injection for dental treatment.

Dr. Norman C. Barber, 40, of 2955 N. Fourth West, Layton, pleaded guilty to the two second-degree felonies and is scheduled for sentencing June 14.

He was initially charged with seven sex-related charges dating back to 1983 but pleaded guilty to the two second-degree felonies in a plea negotiation with the Davis County attorney's office. Barber faces one-to-15-year prison terms on each charge.

According to court records, two girls, both now 16, said Barber sexually abused them in his Layton dental office after administering either gas or an injection.

One told investigators she awoke once and found herself naked and Barber in his underwear and the second girl, according to court records, said she awoke naked and found Barber, too, with no clothes on.

Barber was originally charged with two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony carrying a prison term of five years to life and a minimum mandatory term of three, six or nine years; four counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony; and one third-degree felony forcible sexual abuse charge, carrying a zero-to-five-year prison term.

The Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing of the state's Department of Business Regulation reported Barber still maintains an active dental license.
