Lon A. Dean says he has the perfect job - owner and manager of both a travel agency and a video movie store.
"I've always been a movie buff and I've always loved to travel, so I guess I have the best of both worlds," he said, smiling.Dean grew up in Smithfield, Cache County, and in Fruit Heights; graduated from Davis High School in 1971; went on a mission to Hong Kong for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and graduated from Brigham Young University at Hawaii in 1978 with a degree in business management and Asian studies.
He earned a master's degree from the American Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, near Phoenix, in 1981 and spent the next year working as a loan officer in a mortgage bank in Salt Lake City.
"I hated the job and hated being stuck behind a desk all the time. My wife, Irene, and I got the idea to open a video store, so I quit my job and we opened Video House on Orchard Drive in North Salt Lake in 1982." In 1986, they opened Travel House in Sandy and in the summer of 1987 they moved both businesses to a new location, at 15 S. U.S. 89, in North Salt Lake.
Dean said he takes a different video movie home every night. He has traveled all over the world since he started his travel agency - taking a dozen trips last year, including London, Hong Kong, New Orleans, Disney World in Florida, Puerto Rico, Mexico and cruise trips in the Pacific and Caribbean.
