An Ohio man who refused to leave his motel room for two days has been sentenced to up to 30 days in jail on his guilty plea to marijuana possession charges, 5th Circuit Court officials said Monday.

But Judge Robert Braithwaite said Jeff Bregman, of North Ridgeville, can be freed from jail as soon as his defense attorney arranges travel for Bregman to his home state, where he is to enter a drug abuse treatment center.

The defendant's mother told officers a friend was driving him from San Diego, Calif., back to Ohio, where he was to begin drug-rehabilitation therapy, Police Chief Pete Hansen said.

The two checked into a Cedar City motel May 9, police said, but the other man apparently slipped away and called the mother from Nebraska, saying Bregman "was driving him crazy," Hansen said.

On May 11, police went to the motel and coaxed the suspect out.
