Authorities used motorized rafts to retrieve the body of a Missouri college student who died in a fall Friday while on a river trip on the San Juan River in San Juan County, officials said.

John Ruyle, 19, died in the fall while hiking with about 15 other students and two faculty members, said John Moore, president of Drury College in Springfield, Mo.Ruyle was the last one to hike from the Mules Ear, a sheer, 1000-foot sandstone fin on the shores of the San Juan River 10 miles downstream from Bluff, when he fell 70-100 feet, a commercial San Juan River guide said.

When he failed to return to camp, his colleagues returned to base of the cliff and found his body. Authorities retrieved the body Saturday afternoon after floating downstream and carrying the body out by raft, the guide said.
