Building for 1996 and beyond and needing help especially in the lines, Utah State will sign 22 football players. The first 15 signed early Wednesday.

USU got letters of intent from a JC All-American QB who will move to receiver with 4.26 speed in the 40, a receiver who originally signed at Miami (Fla.) and a defensive tackle who's a former Los Angeles Times Prep Defensive Player of the Year."We aimed high, and I'm quite pleased with the class we've put together," says coach John L. Smith.

Chaffey College QB Steve Smith (5-foot-9, 175), who set Florida's 200-meter prep record (21.9) and ran for 210 yards vs. the nation's No. 1 JC defense (San Bernardino Valley) seems an impressive prize.

As do Chaffey WR Nakia Jenkins (6-3, 212) - like Smith, from Belle Glade, Fla. - who signed with Miami out of high school, were he was a Blue Chip and Superprep All-American; and DT John Latu, (6-1, 280, Etiwanda, Calif.), who was JC first-team all-state and all-conference.

High; LB Blake Eagal, St. Mary's (Calif.) High;OL Vince Gargalikis, Pittsburgh (Calif.)
