A chief campaign aide to state Sen. Glade Nielsen, R-Roy, has been elected chairman of the Republican Party of Weber County.
Jim Klaus, Roy, an engineer for TRW Inc., was elected unanimously at the party's convention Saturday after his predecessor, Lane Ronnow, announced that he would not seek another term.Klaus had been Ronnow's only opponent. The outgoing chairman moved from the podium that Klaus be accepted as the new chairman by acclamation.
"Up until last night I hadn't really made a final decision, even though I had announced," Ronnow told about 100 Republican candidates gathered for the convention at Mount Ogden Middle School. "My decision was based on the organizational ability and the dedication of Jim Klaus."
After the convention, Ronnow said he had spent the last two days checking out Klaus' philosophy and capabilities to be sure he was leaving the party in good hands.
As to his resignation, he said, "Some things have jelled that may have precluded me serving the full term. Personal things that I'd rather not comment on. Nothing sinister . . ."
Earlier this year Ronnow ran unsuccessfully for state GOP chairman.
Klaus in an interview said he hopes to bring some of the successful techniques to the party that he brought to Nielsen's campaign.
