The federal Department of Education has selected Pocatello High School as one of the most outstanding in the nation.
Principal Carole McWilliam was notified late Thursday that the school was selected in the National Secondary School Recognition Program.Officials who evaluated the school during a visit in April "were very impressed with how hard the teachers here were willing to work for so little money, compared to other schools they visited," McWilliam said. "They were impressed with the kids, with the diversity of the student body and yet the good spirit of the school."
Some 640 schools throughout the nation were initially nominated and 240 had on-site evaluations. There was no indication how many schools will be honored in the program.
McWilliam said he hoped the recognition would attract the attention of individuals and businesses who might offer support to the school.
The state will mark the honor later this month and a special ceremony for all schools receiving recognition will be held this fall in Washington, D.C.
