A 3-year-old Staten Island boy Saturday was attacked by a wolf his mother kept as a pet and suffered severe head wounds, police said.

The boy's mother, Susan Bajinsky, was cited for a health code violation for keeping the wolf, which was beaten to death by her boyfriend, Billy Mann, after the attack, said Officer Peter Berry, a police spokesman.The boy, Timothy Bajinski, was alone in his back yard when the wolf attacked him at about 4:50 p.m., Berry said. His mother and her boyfriend were inside the house at the time.

Timothy suffered severe head lacerations was taken to a Staten Island hospital, where he was being operated on, Berry said.

The wolf's body was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, where it will be tested for rabies Monday, Berry said.

Berry said said the case was referred to the Bureau of Child Welfare and was also being investigated for possible criminal violations.

He said Susan Bajinsky kept the North American hybrid wolf as a pet.
