Roman Catholic Church officials are considering a $5.3 million renovation of the Cathedral of the Madeleine to restore church features and improve the landmark's utilities, a parish newsletter said.

Renovation plans include restoration of the downtown church's stained glass, numerous art works, woodwork and floors, the newsletter said. The building's electrical heating and cooling systems also would be improved, the newsletter said.Church officials are also initiating a "fund-raising feasibility study" to determine from where the $5.3 million architects estimate the renovation may cost will come, according to the newsletter.

"We recognize, of course, that a fund-raising project cannot be limited to the parish, but will have to extend to the diocese and to community at large," the Rev. M. Francis Mannion wrote in the newsletter.

The decision to begin the renovation project has not been finalized, pending the results of the feasibility study and comment from parishioners, the newsletter said.
