A search for a woman who police said asked a young couple for help and then kidnapped their infant daughter was intensified Saturday.

Authorities said the woman, about seven months pregnant and known only to the baby's family as Kay, snatched April Danielle Henson, 2 weeks old, from her crib while the mother was preparing breakfast Friday. The baby's parents had befriended the woman, who had turned up at their door Thursday night claiming she had been beaten and needed assistance. She asked to spend the night, and they let her sleep on a couch.

Spartanburg County sheriff's deputies searched the area around the home of Tim and Sheila Hinson for six hours Friday after the mother discovered her baby missing. They also brought in bloodhounds and used a plane to search for the missing woman and child.

Law enforcement officials in North Carolina and Georgia were alerted. The FBI is also involved in the case.

The woman apparently did not take the baby for ransom, sheriff's spokesman Mark Kruea said, although that has not been entirely ruled out.
