State Republican Party Chairman Jack Roberts has decided not to seek re-election this June.
Roberts' stepping down means both the Republican and Democratic parties will have new chairmen later this year. Democratic Chairman Randy Horiuchi has also decided not to run again.Roberts, owner of the Park West Ski Resort, was picked by the central committee to replace Craig Moody in January. Moody, a state House leader, resigned because of legislative duties.
Roberts said then he might not seek a regular, two-year term, but later said he would run. Now he says he doesn't have enough time to commit to the volunteer job.
Others interested in the state GOP chairmanship, according to several Republican leaders, are former state chairman Chuck Akerlow and former Salt Lake County GOP chairman Richard Snelgrove. Those two have written to GOP leaders announcing their interest. Others could join the race later.
Akerlow was chairman from 1981-85. Snelgrove was county chairman before he resigned a year ago to run unsuccessfully against Rep. Wayne Owens, D-Utah.
