France detonated a nuclear device Friday at Mururoa atoll, marking a resumption of tests on the French Polynesian islands, New Zealand scientists said.

Fran Wilde, minister for disarmament, said the test occurred at 4:45 a.m. some 3,500 miles northeast of Wellington in the south Pacific and had an estimated yield of 15 kilotons. One kiloton represents the explosive force of 1,000 tons of TNT.The test is France's first since November.
