C.S. Harding Mott, who teamed with his father to develop and sustain what is now the nation's 12th largest charitable foundation, has died. He was 82.
Harding Mott, chairman emeritus of the Flint-based Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, died in his sleep Wednesday at a nursing home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.Harding Mott played a low-key but crucial role with the foundation begun in 1926 by his father, who served 60 years on the General Motors Corp. board of directors and once was the automaker's largest individual shareholder.
Charles Mott supported the foundation decades after its formation. But it burgeoned when Harding Mott, an original foundation trustee, persuaded his father in 1963 to donate 1.8 million GM shares worth $129 million at the time.
