A husband and wife team have turned a love of animals into a full-time volunteering experience in the Hooper area.

Sheri Martinez has been the unpaid director of Wasatch Humane for more than a year, handing 10-60 calls a day and answering the phones 24 hours a day in her home. Her husband, Larry, provides many of the essential services that make the animal shelter possible, maintaining the property, planning and executing improvements and hauling equipment and supplies. He cleans up after more than a hundred animals a day.

In addition, Sheri takes programs to schools, and they both provide animals for visits to area nursing homes as pet therapy for the patients.

The couple was recently honored as Salute to Volunteers winners. According to the program script, "Day in, day out, their dedication is an outstanding example to the community and an inspiration to their co-workers. . . . Your efforts remind us to become a more compassionate people. We salute you because you are volunteers who make a difference in our community."
