Former Oklahoma cornerback Jerry Parks tried Wednesday to enter a no contest plea in the shooting and wounding of a teammate but withdrew the plea after a judge refused to give Parks a two-year deferred sentence.

Parks is charged with shooting with intent to injure in the Jan. 13 shooting of Zarak Peters following an argument in the Oklahoma athletic dormitory.Park's attorney read a statment in which Peters said he favored the two-year deferred sentence for Parks. Peters said he also wanted Parks to pay his medical bills.

District Judge Preston Trimble said he couldn't follow Peters' recommendation because Peters could have been killed in the shooting. Peters was shot in the chest.

The shooting charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
