A Salt Lake man was killed and two friends were injured when their four-wheel-drive vehicle rolled four times on a steep hillside near Parleys Canyon early Tuesday.
James Bailey, 20, 1346 S. 10th East, was killed when he was thrown from the vehicle and it rolled over the top of him in the 5:30 a.m. accident. The driver, Greg E. Neerings, 18, 1064 Windsor St., suffered a broken arm and facial lacerations but was able to walk from the crash site one mile east of 2466 S. 30th East and summon help at a home near the mouth of the canyon.
Two other occupants of the vehicle, a 16-year-old female who suffered lacerations and a broken arm, and a 21-year-old man, who was not injured, were taken from the crash site to a hospital by helicopter. The other occupant of the vehicle, an 18-year-old man, left the scene uninjured.
Salt Lake County Sheriff's deputy S.D. Perry said blood-alcohol tests were taken on all but one of the occupants of the vehicle. "About the only thing we're waiting for now is results from toxicology so we will know what direction the investigation is taking," he said.
Sheriff's deputies described the area as treacherous for four-wheeling in the day and very dangerous in the dark. They said Neerings was apparently trying to back the Chevrolet Blazer down a steep road when he lost control of the vehicle.
