A May 23 date has been set by the Piute School District Board of Education for a bond election to raise $805,000 for a major addition to the Piute High School.
If passed, the bond would be used to build a new gymnasium and theater complex north of the present gymnasium.Board members will conduct meetings May 12 and May 16 to explain the project to the public. The May 12 meeting will be at Piute High School for Junction, Circleville and Kingston residents. Marysvale residents will meet in the Oscarson Elementary School May 16. Both meetings will be at 8 p.m.
The proposal was already discussed during an earlier meeting of residents from the Koosharem and Greenwich areas.
The 20-year bond would add $4.80 in taxes annually for the owner of a home valued at $40,000.
The new addition would contain about 17,000 square feet with a 1,300 seating-capacity gym, part of which would be used for the wrestling program. The theater would seat about 200 people.
Officials said the present gymnasium would continue to be used for athletic programs. There would be some remodeling that would be financed through the district's regular budget.
The gym was built in 1958 when the high school was built to consolidate Piute High School and Marysvale High School.
Construction will begin this summer if the bond issue passes.
Polls will open May 23 at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Polling locations are: Marysvale Town Hall, Piute County Courthouse, Junction; Little Red School, Greenwich; and town halls in Circleville and Junction.
