The number of Vietnamese leaving their country for the United States under the U.S. Orderly Departure Program has reached a record high, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

Between Oct. 1, 1988, and April 30 of this year, 14,489 people left Vietnam for the United States under the program, said U.S. Embassy spokesman Ross Petzing.For all of fiscal 1988, Petzing said 12,259 people departed Vietnam.
