The Forest Service announced a toll-free telephone number so campers can reserve sites at 600 national forest campgrounds months in advance.

Callers will be charged a reservation fee of $6 for a family site and $10 for a group site. Camping fees for family sites range from $4 to $12 a night. Fees for group sites depend on group size and the campground."This new service helps us serve our visitors better," said Forest Service Chief F. Dale Robertson. "People can plan ahead and avoid the frustration of seeing a `no vacancy' sign."

The reservation number is 1-800-283-CAMP. It will be staffed 10 a.m.-7 p.m. MDT Monday through Friday and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekends.

Reservations for single family sites will be accepted up to 120 days in advance and up to 360 days in advance for group sites.
