Kitty Dukakis urged a college graduating class to be "open and flexible" enough to accept bad and good times - qualities she used to fight her drug and alcohol addiction.

"I've had to be open to the reality that I would spend the rest of my life recovering from that dependency, one day at a time," the wife of Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis said Sunday to the 1989 New England Institute of Technology graduates in Providence, R.I. "I've had to learn these lessons in the public eye, with the intense scrutiny of the media and with the knowledge and awareness of tens of millions of people."
