A small plane crashed and exploded as it landed at a coastal airport Monday, killing all 16 people believed on board.

Among the passengers reported on the twin-engine Beachcraft 99 plane were five Swedish politicians, a parliament spokeswoman said. But the fire that followed the explosion was so severe that authorities were unable to determine if the 14 passengers and two crewmen listed on the Holmstrom Flyg flight from Stockholm were actually on board, said police duty officer Sigurd Gustafsson.

The politicians were three members of Parliament, Anna-Greta Wohlin, Anders Andersson and Hans Rosengren; a former legislator, Klas Renfeldt; and the former Stockholm party boss of the governing Social Democrats, John-Olle Persson, Swedish radio reported.
