Police booked a Salt Lake man into jail after hospital X-rays indicated he had swallowed a ring believed to have been taken from Sears, 754 S. State.
A salesman said a man approached the jewelry display about 6 p.m. Wednesday and asked to look at some rings. While showing the man a diamond ring, said to be worth about $750, the employee turned away for a moment to help another customer. When the employee turned back he noticed that the ring the man had given back appeared to be a fake, according to a police report. The man then left the store, followed by security officers, who apprehended him.
When police arrived they were unable to locate the ring, so, believing he may have swallowed it, they took him to Holy Cross Hospital. X-rays showed what appeared to be a ring in his intestines, the report stated.
Rick William Cowley, 23, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of felony theft and terroristic threats. The ring had not been recovered as of Friday night.
