The Social Security Administration district office and the U.S. Postal Service Friday were still trying to track down about 1,000 missing Social Security checks of Midvale and Tooele residents.
Checks of about 500 residents in each community should have been received by Wednesday, prompting a search on two fronts, Steve L. Jollensten, Social Security district manager, said. They are the U.S. Treasury office in San Francisco, where the checks are printed and mailed to residents in this area, and the main Salt Lake Post Office, where the trays of checks should have been received for distribution to local post offices.
He said Social Security checks are sometimes lost at one or two locations a month across the country. Generally, the problem is solved in one to three days.
"The post office has indicated that once the checks are found that it will expedite delivery," Jollensten said.
