Many people can remember the popular television commercial showing the Maytag repairman with a forlorn look on his face and obviously upset about not having enough work to do.

The Whirlpool Corp. has come up with an idea of do-it-yourself repair manuals for their appliances that probably will make all repairpeople unhappy over losing business.Whirlpool has published the eighth in a series of repair manuals for its appliances, the latest being on direct-drive washer repairs. Each contains non-technical terms, numerous photographs and diagrams for step-by-step instructions to guide the consumers through the repair proc-ess.

Frank Villines, manager of graphic arts services for Whirlpool, said the new manual covers direct-drive Whirlpool washers produced in the last seven years. And if a person gets stuck during the repair, he can call a toll-free number and talk to a technical consultant.

When receiving parts to make the repairs, they come individually packaged with simplified instructions.

Other manuals in the Whirlpool repair series are for belt-driven automatic washers, dryers, trash compactors, ice maker components for refrigerators and freezers, dishwashers, electric ranges, refrigerators and freezers.
