The Woodland Park Care Center is a beautifully decorated home for the elderly. The rooms are spacious - wallpaper and oak trim brighten the walls. But the best facility cannot always keep loneliness at bay when the days are long and visitors few and far between.
But the Assistance League is providing a service to local care centers and rest homes: not just in the quilted lap robes and shawls fashioned by hand for the elderly, but in one-on-one visits and with a program of music and dance that made a very dapper Joseph Peeples, 95, dance a graceful waltz with the Assistance League emcee, Camie David, at Woodland Park recently.Deon Hulbert is the one-on-one coordinator scheduling the two-dozen members who visit nursing home residents who no longer have family and friends in the area. Carole Putnam is director of the Senior Citizens Specialty Service, Ila Jack is vice chairman and Connie Fuller is entertainment coordinator.
Other committee members are: Beverly Glauser, LaVon Decker, Kay Alder, Colleen Malouf, Betsy Newton, Beth Parrish, Jackie Page, Florence Christensen, Dorothy Olsen, Robin McCabe, Mary May, Jane McCarthy and Pat Blodgett.
The Assistance League of Salt Lake City is a non-profit, nonsectarian, nonpolitical, tax-exempt charity organization. It is a chapter of the National Assistance League.
