Hungarian border troops dismantle parts of the electrified double barbed-wire fence, also known as the Iron Curtain, outside the village of Hegyeshalom. About 160 miles of fence along Hungary's western border with Austria will be removed by Dec. 31, 1990, creating the first East-West border without barriers in 40 years. Hungary consulted neither Austria nor its Warsaw Pact allies about its decision to tear down the fence. "The political conditions are ripe," said one official. "Restructuring in Hungary does not make it necessary to maintain (the fence)."
