President Najib says Afghanistan is in danger of becoming a "second Lebanon" and has urged the West to help end the war between his Soviet-backed government and U.S.-armed Moslem guerrillas.

"It is in the interest of the West to ensure and maintain peace and to establish a broad-based government through a multiparty system, not through attempts to bring to power a small extremist, fanatical group," Najib said Tuesday.Speaking to foreign reporters during an hourlong news conference at the Foreign Ministry, Najib said Western countries should embrace a "new spirit of detente" and do their utmost to help reach a political settlement.
