Five outstanding Utah high school seniors are winners of this year's Utah Jazz/NBA Scholarships.
The scholarships, in the amount of $1,000 each, were awarded to Lakeysha Austin, Kearns High School; Pamela Sugihara, East High School; Deanna Dannels, Judge Memorial High School; Derrick A. Walker, Box Elder High School; and Eun-Young Park, Provo High School. The students were honored during half-time of the Jazz vs. Dallas Mavericks game April 4 in the Salt Palace.Austin is a member of the National Honor Society and has been president of MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) Club for the past two years. She plans to pursue a career in engineering.
Sugihara is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Spanish Club, Science Club and Spirit Club. She was a candidate for Miss Asia of Utah in 1987 and plans on a career in medicine.
An honor student, Dannels won her school's Academic Award for Excellence in Drama last year and the Baylor Scholarship this year. The editor of Judge's literary magazine, Dannels plans to study communication in college.
Walker is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in basketball and baseball. He was on his school's All-State Academic Football Team this past season and plans to study medicine.
Park, a native of Korea, came to the United States with her parents four years ago. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Science Club, French Club, Computer Club, Key Club and her school's symphony orchestra. She is also the editor of the school yearbook and plans to study chemistry, computers and zoology in college.
The winners were chosen for their academic performance, ACT test scores, involvement in extracurricular activities and an essay on the importance of a college education.
