More than 30,000 animals went through the Humane Society of Utah shelter during 1987.

Gene Baierschmidt, the society's new executive director, said that the agency endeavors to reunite lost pets with their owners. He said about 3,000 animals were adopted last year, and the society's spay and neuter clinic treated about 5,000 animals. He said more than 700 cases of animal cruelty were checked last year by the society's only investigator. The agency continually receives reports of cruelty not only to domestic animals but to livestock.

Baierschmidt said the San Francisco Society for Cruelty to Animals has a goal of eliminating all stray animals from the streets by 1992. He hopes the same goal can be accomplished in Utah.

The director announced that the society is the recipient of a sizable bequest from the estate of Ora Rew Alt, a Salt Lake woman who died April 5 at age 98. The amount was not disclosed.
