Granite School Board has approved hiring of a consultant to study the district's employee insurance plan and make recommendations.

Tuesday night, the board accepted a proposal from Mercer, Meidinger and Hansen, a Denver firm, to make the study. The district wants a review of benefits, costs, demographics, areas that generate losses, misuse and abuse of their insurance program. Insurance costs for all Utah school districts have escalated dramatically in recent years and many are looking for ways to moderate the cost increases without critically reducing benefits.

The district will pay the Denver consultants $16,800 for their services.
